June 2007 Rainfall Sunday, June 17 2007 12:06 PM
What a great last few days it has been here in the Highlands, June's rainfall total is currently sitting at over 200mm here at Mittagong, With over 100mm of rainfall within the last 48hrs form a second East Coast Low withing 7 Days, I decided to pop out and discover how the local Creeks and Rivers had faired, what a surprise it was to find the Wingecarribee breaking its banks as shown below.
This is a shot of the Wingecarribee river on the 16/6/2007 from between Moss Vale/Burradoo along the Moss Vale cycle way. This river has headwaters from just below robertson and flows into the Warragamba Dam catchment. Click HERE for more images - Coming Soon.

Domain Hosting Tuesday, May 10 2006 12:06 PM
Many thanks for those who have made many generous offers for hosting our site, we have manged to secure a hosting provider that should ensure our site survival for a while to come.

Domain Hosting Tuesday, January 10 2006 2:04 PM
For the last 3 years we have been hosting this website at cost as a community service to the public, unfortunately this expense has become to great and we are struggling to keep the site affloat, consequently I have decided to either find alternative hosting at a lower cost and/or lower annual domain registration costs and domain hosting costs. This decision may mean closure of the site permanetly or change of domain name or change of website hosting, in the meantime there may be some downtime during changes. If a domain name occurs the site will be unavailable under the current URL, this will become impossible to find as the existing ISP will not allow a forwarding URL page during the transisition, this will mean that until it can be refound by a search engine and found via a search it will not be available, alternatively if you would like to e-mail me and I can notify you of any changes to the URL.
thanks for everyones support over the years, hope to see you again whever we go.

regards
Dave

Rebuilt temp sensor Tuesday, January 10 2006 1:58 PM
After a serious failure of the outside temperature sensor (actual sensor was badly corroded and disintegrated to powder when touched). I have relinquished the head unit of its temp and humidity sensor, this has enabled the continuation of external observations and the restoration of accurate outside humidity measurements after a long period where the humidity sensor was reading low due to contimination of the sensor with solvents, unfortunately we now no longer have internal temp or humidity readings.

The Moss Vale Mixed - Southern Highlands NSW Sunday, September 11 2005 12:03 PM
The Moss Vale mixed was a re-enacment of the "Mixed" style of service that used to serve many a remote railhead in NSW, this re-enactment was run by the New South Wales Rail Heritage Museum and ran on the 3/9/05 as part of the NSW 150 years of railways celebrations in September 2005.
I managed to catch this train at a few location and will add photos to a new page HERE. It was fantastic to see this re-enactment and attracted many people with the spectactle of 2 vintage engines on a main line goods train.

Pictures from the Highlands Monday, August 22 2005 4:36 PM
Picture of the Day,
This photo was taken one foggy morning way back in 2003, the mountain in the center of the shot is Mt Alexandra with mittagong in the foreground under the fog layer, I really love foggy mornings in the highlands and I hope to share my collection of fog photos that I have accumulated over the next few weeks. This photo was taken from mittagong lookout atop Mt Gibraltar. (click thumbnail for larger image)

P.S. quite a brief but cold front passed through the highlands this morning with the temp dropping to around 4C with showers, wind chill dropped below zero with the passage of the front, snow was reported down in the monaro with a few centimeters reported at Cooma.

Thursday 23/6/05 Sunday, June 26 2005 10:09 PM
Just like to add a few comments regarding the event in our region on Tursday 22/6/05. after a very cold night, and a cold start to the day, a rain band heading north arrived at mittagong around 9am, the atmospher hard started to warm as the cold pool was heading north so our only chance of snow was the timing of this rain and the subsequent position of the cold air. The temp was around 3.5C when it started to rain but dropped to around 2.4C during the rain, unfortunately being tied up at work I only managed to experience, the occasional drop of slush as the rain hit initially, over the next few hours the temp crept over 3C and the potential of snow up at 800m reduced, reports from the area included the occasional flake spotted amoingst the rain around Mittagong station to very heavy snow and settling up on top of mittagong range and robertson. above 800m was the place to be within the first 30-45mins afte rthat temps started to rise to high and the snow turned to snow. If anyone has any further info I would love to hear from you.

Webcam Sunday, June 19 2005 11:32 AM
Webcam resolution increased to 800x600.
Let me know if you find this resolution to high as the filesize is now double the size than it was at 800x600 resulting in slower download

Upper Cold Pool Sunday, September 5 2004 8:55 PM
The upper cold pool that has been stationed over our area for the last 36hrs has produced some interesting weather events in our area.
Sat 4/9/04:
Late saturday night (around 10pm) a short sleet/snow shower was experienced on top of Mt Gibraltar (860m). a quick drive up mt gibraltar at 10:30pm as the temp tumbled to around 3C in mittagong, the temp for snow on top of the Mt was almost within the ballpark (usually 2.5C or lower in mittagong and showers means there is a pretty good chance of snow on the Mittagong range and mt gibraltar)for a fall, upon turning the last corner into the mt gibraltar reserve did the rain turn to sleet/snow, this elevation is probably around 840m and only about 20m from the summit, so this went to show how marginal the conditions were and the chances of it turning straight back into rain was extremely high, after a stop at the towers the snow turned back to rain and that was the end of that, unfortunately the camera was again at home and no photos were had. Unforunately the postion of the coldest air must have either been south or west of our area as the 9am 4/9/04 sounding had -3C at 850hpa. If only the atmosphere here was just 1C cooler.

Sun 5/9/04:
The afternoon of the 5/9/04 saw some great storm formation across our entire region. one storm chase was a chase to a storm up wombeyan cabes road, we experienced hail for around 20mins. While the ground had a light cover this was nothing compared to a strip about 500m long by only about 40m wide as we drove out of a side street off wombeyan caves road, this strip had hail on the road at about 25mm thick, the car was starting to slide and lost traction on an uphill section as the cover was so thick. The temp in this section was also around 2.7C at one point The isolation of the hail event was strange but watching the radar cells popping up and deteriorationg very quickly and the dynamics of the atmosphere, events such as this would be coming and goinf pretty rapidly, this was probably the reason behind this isolated event.

More Snow for the Highlands Sunday, August 15 2004 9:08 PM
Snow was experienced once again at 3am today 15/8 as low as 630m in the Bowral/Mittagong area, photo and report can be found Here

SNOW, SNOW, SNOW Sunday, July 18 2004 11:19 AM
What an fantastic event, snow started around 9pm on Saturday 17/7 and preceded well into the early morning of 18/7, 3cm was received here in Mittagong and around 7-10cms on the top of Mt Gibraltar and the Mittagong range. Full report and a few pickies soon.

Low Level Snow Falls Friday, June 18 2004 4:20 AM
GFS has been progging a very cold outbreak for the last few days occuring from friday evening in the SE extending to the mid Northern Tablelands sunday morning, there apears to be a good chance of snow falls accross the great dividing range and down to around 900m. the jury is currently out regarding the southern highlands, as the arrival time of the cold air and moisture do not coincide to maximize the chance of snow at our lower elevatons, the great dividing range to our west usually rings any moisture out of these westerely systems before they arrive to the east. Keep an eye on weatherzone.com.au and ski.com.au for reports of snowfalls in your local areas. If anyone has reports they would like to share please do so and I will post them here. Certainly one to keep an eye on.

Mittagong Freeze Levels. Tuesday, June 1 2004 10:49 PM
Mittagong Freeze level charts are back for Winter this year, unfortunately I will only be able to update it once a day, but this should be good enough to obtain a good indication at what level the freeze level will occur over our area and hence a good prediction for local snow falls. see link below

Temp Sensor Wednesday, February 25 2004 9:38 PM
Temp Sensor back online after a day of false readings, moisture had entered the connectors again and caused an open circuit. I have now hard wired the entire cable run and hope this fixes the problem. I apologise for the inconvenience.

Southern Highlands Earthquake Friday, December 12 2003 9:00 AM
An Earthquake was expereinced here in Mittagong around 9:15pm on the 11/12/03. Two loud bangs shook our house, these bangs felt like a cracking noise such as a rock fracture. The earthquake measured 4.3 on the richter scale.

Geoscience report

If anyone has any reports we woud love to hear from you.

In other news, we have been having spurious readings with our humidity sensor for about a week, readiings only seem to be at the extremes 10% then will swing to high humidity, assuming a faulty capacitance sensor and hope to replace soon.

Weather Webcam Tuesday, October 21 2003 5:20 PM
Have alook at our new Weather Webcam

It is currently on test and may suffer outages, please check the date stamp if images are not updating, the image is uploaded every 5mins.

Weather Webcam

The camera is pointing NNW from the lower side of Mt Gibraltar ,the scene that you can see is looking straight into Nattai national park with the hill on the right being Mt Alexandra.
Most weather systems (eg storms) in our area seem to come from the South and around to the west so unfortunately the systems will probably come from behind the cam. Unfortunately pointing it west will involve looking straight into trees and south is straight into mt gibraltar, this view is the only open view from our location.
Let us know what you think.
